Sample Size

This show will tie samples, inspiration, lines, etc. from music of the past to music today; the concept is to look for threads across cultures, history, and genres. What happens when music crosses boundaries (national, cultural, genre, etc.)? Why are some samples more popular than others? What are the ethics of sampling when it comes to masters, compensation, posthumous sampling, sampling of media sound bites? What happens when a song uses a sample in a context completely different from its original form? We want to examine how culture influences lyrics and lyrics influence culture, as well as how samples unexpectedly tie together moments of culture. Each show will involve 40/20 music/talking, with our commentary interspersed.
