LOOKING THROUGH (THE) WINDOW
written by Anne Victoire Beugre ’29

Los Angeles has traditionally gotten a bad wrap. Most people can’t even remember exactly why they’re supposed to hate it. Is it because it’s a Brave New World style hedonistic fantasy land with Botox advertisement as far as the eye can see; is it because it’s a wasteland filled with drugs and homelessness; or is it because it’s a former creative haven that has since turned into Disneyland for influencers not good enough to make it in New York? No matter their reason, the general consensus among LA-haters is that a city of just under 4 million people can easily be distilled into a single sentence.
I would recommend that those people listen to Windows.
Windows is a LA-based band founded by musician and native Californian Matteo Arias. Their music is a fusion of the Californian country-rock and psychedelic genres. Californian country-rock specifically seems to be a genre that is particularly near and dear to Arias’ heart. He sees Windows as his chance to carry the torch passed on from other LA-based fusion rock acts such as Canned Heat.
In its current iteration, the band is comprised of six members including Arias (guitar and vocals), his wife Marissa Yardley (keyboard and percussion), Mikey Whiteside (synthesizer and keys), Julian Ducatenzeiler (drums), and their newer member as of the writing of this article, Nick Dhmlow (guitar). Arias described the band as a “revolving door” of extremely talented people in the Los Angeles area. Still, despite frequent rosters changes, their sound has mostly remained the same, with Arias only working with musicians he believes have a similar sound to the one he wants to cultivate.
A consistent sound isn’t the only thing that Arias is hoping to cultivate. He also wants to create an atmosphere where people feel comfortable dancing and cutting loose. As he puts it:
“Touring is difficult, but the best thing about it is seeing the audience’s reaction. Like last night, people were dancing around. That’s what I’m here for, people having a good time. Hopefully we make the night a little more fun.”
