Globalization #2: Topical Dancer, Charlotte Adigéry & Bolis Pupul

In 2022, it can be hard to tell, musically, who is influencing whom. Beneath the surface of this album: rhythms derived from traditional West African and Caribbean styles discussed last week, Kraftwerk, Talking Heads, and more. Adigéry's own family heritage reflects our increasingly globalized world, too—including Yoruba, Martinican, Guadeloupian, and French Jewish—and she lives in Belgium. With the constant, instant sharing of music and other information today, it almost seems overdetermined that this sort of album, capturing this broad range of overlapping influences, would emerge. How fortunate we are, then, to have received such a fun and original album, in terms of not only sonic richness but also lyrics, from simple danceable hooks to witty critiques about politics, race, and sexuality.
