The Yale football team will take on Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, California this Saturday at 5:05 pm EST. WYBC Sports’ John Ryan and Tayo Ajayi are currently on the road with the team, getting an exclusive look into the team’s journey and preparation for this weekend’s matchup.
The Bulldogs are used to road trips that take hours on the bus, but this time, the team required the airways to reach their destination. Thursday afternoon, the players, donned in coats and ties, boarded a chartered plane from John F. Kennedy International Airport. Coaches, staff and media accompanied the team on the six-hour flight to Santa Maria, California.
The team was greeted with Yale hospitality at a dinner provided by Peter and Mary Beth Oppenheimer, the parents of Yale senior offensive lineman John Oppenheimer. The squad feasted on a great western barbeque while conversing about the trip and the upcoming game. Cal Poly President Jeffrey Armstrong and Yale alum and New York Times best-selling author Keith Ferrazzi joined the team for dinner.
Friday, the squad woke up early for breakfast and positional meetings. In the early afternoon, Yale head coach Tony Reno called for a walkthrough in the hotel parking lot. The offense and defense ran through various calls and assignments before boarding the team buses to Alex G. Spanos stadium, the home of Caly Poly and the site of the team’s official walkthrough.
WYBC followed the Bulldogs to the stadium and watched Reno lead the players through warm ups and a few formations. The special teams unit also got work in, something the hotel’s small parking lot didn’t allow. Under the bright California sun, the walkthrough was brief and to the point, lasting under an hour in total.
After the walkthrough, the team headed back to the hotel for a meal and some much needed rest and treatment before the evening’s additional team meetings. Stay tuned for more updates as Yale prepares to take on the Cal Poly Mustangs.
